A new study published in the February 8 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, by Dr. Sheldon Litwin, chief of cardiology, of the Medical College of Georgia, shows that gastric bypass surgery seems to help many obese people not only lose weight but can help their strained hearts return to a more normal size and function. They studied 423 severely obese patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery and a reference group of severely obese subjects that did not have surgery.

The Effects of Obesity on the Heart

It is common knowledge in the medical community that obese people have more heart related problems than those who are not obese. It stands to reason, because the extra weight causes stress on the heart by making it pump harder. It is known that obesity is a risk factor for several heart related issues such as heart failure, heart attack, arrthymias such as atrial fibrillation, and of course, death.

Structural changes in the heart, such as increased heart muscle mass in the left ventricle and an enlargement of cavity of the right ventricle, can lead to heart failure and a host of other conditions as well.
