The Greek Islands are famous for their cats. They come in all colours, but they are all similar in shape: lean and long-legged with a trim coat of fur. Sometimes they are in gangs, sometimes they are off on their own. And every cafe or taverna will have a cat or two nudging at your ankles.
Tolerated but not cosseted, they live outdoors and are seldom taken inside. Some are a little battered, with eye disease or lost legs, but they live on the streets and must take their chances. That doesn't mean that they are not appreciated or loved. The islanders know their worth as mice and rat catchers, and they keep them fed.
Greece has had a long association with cats: ailouros, the Greek name for cat, has given us ailurophile and ailurophobe, to describe people who either love or are fearful of cats.
